I’ve been trying to make 2 more purses for my (belated) Christmas gifts….
I used Simplicity 7161 to make both view C and view E. I wasn’t happy with either finished product, so I’m going to have to make 2 different purses to use as gifts. But I think I will use these to send to my young cousins to use for playing dress up. I did alter the pattern by putting a magnet through some button holes, to make it a little nicer than using the suggested closure-velcro.
I would not recommend this pattern to others, especially beginning sewers like myself.
The reasons that I didn’t like the pattern?
1. On View C- you have to hand sew the strap closed. My hand sewing is NOT good, I’d prefer to machine sew the whole thing to make it sturdier. There’s a detail pic of the strap below.
2. On View E- The bottom is terrible. I couldn’t get it to fit the purse very well, so it puckered a bit, and also, there’s no way to finish the inside lining, it looks terrible. The pattern calls for you to serge the botom, but on a “Sewing Pattern for Dummies” pattern, I didn’t think this was logical. Isn’t serging a little more advanced? And you need a special machine… anyway, there’s a detail pic below to show how messy the lining looks.
Here are the purses I made in View C:
The change purse I made to match is from Cynthia Treen’s Last-Minute Fabric Gifts: 30 Hand-Sew, Machine-Sew, and No-Sew Projects. I talked about it here.
